The University of South Carolina Upstate, or USC Upstate, is a public university located in Spartanburg, which is the county seat of Spartanburg County, situated in the US state of South Carolina, also being the largest city in Spartanburg County, and the second-largest city of the three primary cities in the Upstate region of South Carolina, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 40 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
USC Upstate was established in 1967, when Spartanburg Regional Campus was opened, as a two-year college with an initial enrollment of 177 students, adopting its current name in 1975. Today, the University of South Carolina Upstate is the fastest growing university in the state, offering both undergraduate and graduate programs for students in the Upstate and surrounding areas. According to U.S. News and World Report, USC Upstate is one of the top four public comprehensive colleges in the South.
USC Upstate's athletic teams are known as the Spartans, who compete in 13 sports, for both men and women, in the Atlantic Sun Conference and Division I of the NCAA, including in basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, softball and volleyball. The Spartans are, perhaps, best known for their achievements in baseball and basketball, in which they made most of their notable achievements, in 2005, the baseball team, finishing with the program's best ever record as a member of NCAA Division II.
The University has a living Alumni base of over 15,500. According to the school, over 80% of them still live and work in the upstate region.
